There are two kinds of blocked drain here and they need completely different responses.
The first is a one-off. Something went down that should not have: wipes, cooking fat that set as it cooled, a toy. Those clear properly and stay cleared, and there is nothing more to think about.
The second is a drain that blocks every few months on ordinary days, and on these blocks that is nearly always roots at a joint. The estates were laid out from the 1960s onwards on old orchard land, and the planting that went in with them has had fifty years to establish on lots of 700 to 900 square metres. Big blocks grow big trees, and the drainage underneath them is the same vintage as the houses.
What makes this suburb different is the distance involved. From the house to the street boundary is frequently thirty metres or more, so there is a great deal of pipe, plenty of joints, and no shortage of ground for something to be growing in. The fault is regularly nowhere near the building, which is why clearing without locating is a false economy here.

This land was orchard before it was houses. When the estates were laid out from the 1960s the drainage went in with them, and so did the planting, on blocks generous enough to take substantial trees.
Both have now had half a century. Roots go where the moisture is, which means the nearest joint, and once they are inside they regrow after every clear. That is why a drain here blocks at roughly the same interval year after year rather than randomly.
A 900 square metre block puts real distance between the house and the street. Every metre of that is pipe, and every join in it is a place a root can enter or a deposit can catch.
It also means the fault is often invisible from the house. No wet patch, no smell, nothing in the garden to point at, because it is twenty five metres away under lawn. On a small block you can sometimes reason your way to the answer. Here you cannot, and that is what the camera is for.
Once we know where the fault sits, we mark it on the surface. If anything has to be opened up it is one spot, in a known place, rather than an exploratory trench following a pipe down a yard.
On a block with mature planting, a pool, a driveway and established garden beds, that distinction is worth a great deal more than the cost of the inspection.
Worth being honest about: a first blockage rarely needs a camera. Something went down, we clear it, you get on with your day.
A second blockage in the same line inside a year is a different conversation, because the interval is information. That is the point at which paying to see the pipe stops being an upsell and starts being the cheaper path, especially given what lining a long run costs if you get the diagnosis wrong.
Is it one fixture or several? A single slow basin is usually local to that fixture. Several at once, or a toilet and a shower together, means the problem is further down the shared line.
Is the outside gully overflowing? That is the relief point, and if it is running while fixtures inside back up, the blockage is downstream of the house and out in the yard somewhere.

For a one-off, the usual: wipes sold as flushable that are not, cooking fat that set as it cooled, something a child posted down. Those clear properly and stay cleared. For anything that recurs, what went down is rarely the cause at all. The pipe is.
No, and they are the most common avoidable blockage we attend anywhere. They clear the S-bend, which is all the label really promises, then fail to break down the way paper does. They catch on anything rough in the line, and on a long run with roots already in a joint there is plenty to catch on. Once a few collect, everything behind them builds up.
On soap or grease in a basin, sometimes. On roots or a collapsed section, no. They generate heat, sit against the obstruction rather than passing through it, and do real damage to older drainage. They also make the job less safe for whoever comes next, because the water we then work in is caustic. If you have already used one, tell us when you call.
Most clears through an existing access point are $150 to $400, and a stubborn line needing the jetter is $400 to $700. A camera inspection is $250 to $450 with the footage included, and on a repeat blockage here it is genuinely worth it: on a thirty metre run, knowing which joint is failing is the difference between a patch repair and lining the lot.
